Survey reveals top 10 most popular dog and cat food brands in the U.S.
Pet Food Industry, a major U.S. industry magazine, surveyed 1,450 pet owners in the United States to find out which brands of dog and cat food are most popular with them. The survey results were presented at the Petfood Forum by Stephanie Wissink, senior analyst and managing director at Jefferies.
Purina products topped the ranking with 13%. Second place went to Blue Buffalo from General Mills with 7%.
Next came Beneful by Nestle-Purina at 7%, Pedigree by Mars at 6%, Dog Chow (Nestle-Purina) at 5%, Kirkland Costco's own brand at 4% and Purina ONE at 4%, Pro Plan (Nestle-Purina) - 4%, Hill's Science Diet (Colgate) - 3%, Taste of the Wild (Diamond Pet Company) - 3%, IAMS (Mars) - 3%, Rachel Ray Nutrish (JM Smucker) - 3%, Royal Canin (Mars) - 3%.
In addition, according to the survey, it is dry food that consumers purchase most often. Of these respondents, 81% reported using dry pet food in pellet form, while 50% of respondents fed their pets wet or canned products. 17% bought fresh pet food, and 9% bought raw pet food.
However, when the researchers asked what products respondents would buy if they could look past the cost and availability of products, only 36% remained "loyal" to dry pet food and up to 21% to wet pet food. 34% of respondents would buy fresh feed, and 7% would buy raw feed.
